The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data from the Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), which tracks business conditions and projections across the United States. The survey includes information from multiunit and multilocation businesses, offering ongoing measurements of key economic indicators such as revenues, employment, hours worked, and inventories.
BTOS covers all employer businesses in the country except for farms. It provides timely updates every two weeks, allowing for detailed geographic and subsector analysis. This continuous flow of data helps track the effects of events like natural disasters or economic downturns and supports monitoring recovery efforts.
The survey samples about 1.2 million businesses, divided into six panels of roughly 200,000 each. Each panel is surveyed every 12 weeks over a year. According to the Census Bureau, it takes an average respondent around nine minutes to complete the survey.
Data from BTOS will be released biweekly and broken down by sector, state, and the 25 largest metropolitan areas. These results are intended to provide local, state, and federal officials with up-to-date information for policymaking and decision-making purposes. Businesses can also use this data to inform their own economic strategies.
