The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data from the Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), which measures business conditions and projections across the United States. The BTOS collects information from multiunit and multilocation businesses, providing ongoing insights into key economic factors such as revenues, employees, hours worked, and inventories.
According to the Census Bureau, BTOS is designed to represent all employer businesses in the country except farms. Data are gathered every two weeks, allowing for timely tracking of changes in the economy at both geographic and subsector levels. This approach enables monitoring of how events like natural disasters or economic crises affect businesses and supports efforts to track recovery.
The survey sample includes about 1.2 million businesses divided into six panels of approximately 200,000 each. Each panel is asked to report once every 12 weeks over a year. The Census Bureau estimates that respondents spend an average of nine minutes completing the survey.
Biweekly data releases will provide information by sector, state, and for the 25 largest metropolitan areas. According to officials, these results supply real-time data that help local, state, and federal policymakers make informed decisions while also assisting businesses with their own planning.
