The U.S. Census Bureau has released data from the 2024 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), providing a detailed look at income levels and participation in assistance programs among individuals and households across the United States.

The SIPP is a longitudinal survey that follows the same individuals over time to measure changes in various aspects, including economic well-being, family structure, education, assets, health insurance coverage, child care usage, and food security status.

According to the Census Bureau, this release includes data tables on receipt of benefits such as Social Security; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); Supplemental Security Income (SSI); retirement income; unemployment insurance; free and reduced-price school meals; Veterans Administration (VA) benefits; and child support. The tables break down these statistics by demographic characteristics.

Additional tables provide national and state-level measures of wealth and debt by demographic, social, and household characteristics. These include details on home equity, retirement accounts, vehicle debt, credit card debt, and student loans.

A brief titled “Wealth of Households: 2023” uses information from the latest SIPP to examine household wealth in 2023. It discusses differences in asset ownership and debt holding rates as well as variations in median household wealth according to factors like education level and income.

Another brief called “Monthly and Episodic Poverty: 2023” analyzes monthly poverty rates along with episodic poverty—defined as being in poverty for two or more consecutive months—and looks at how long people remain below the poverty line within different demographic groups. This analysis highlights unique aspects of SIPP’s poverty data.

Supporting materials for users are available alongside the data release. These include Data Dictionaries, an online codebook for SIPP users, an updated user guide for navigating the dataset, quick statistics tools through the SIPP Library website (https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/sipp/library.html), as well as access to further resources via the main SIPP site (https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/sipp.html).
