Florida’s public universities have achieved notable recognition in the 2026 Best Colleges rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, with seven institutions ranked among the top 100 national public universities—a record for the state. Florida is now one of the top three states in terms of the number of public national universities in this category.

Four Florida schools remain in the top 50: University of Florida at #7, Florida State University at #21 (up two spots), University of South Florida at #43 (up two spots), and Florida International University at #46. The University of Central Florida is ranked #61, while Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University is listed at #92. For the first time, Florida Atlantic University has entered the top 100, coming in at #100 after climbing three positions.

Ray Rodrigues, Chancellor of the State University System, said, “The State University System of Florida has proven once again why we remain the #1 public university system in the nation. As we continue to build upon the collective strengths of our 12 institutions, our System delivers meaningful impact for students, faculty, and the state’s economic prosperity. The U.S. News & World Report rankings underscore these continued successes and ongoing efforts.”

Board of Governors Chair Brian Lamb added, “This year’s rankings reflect the unwavering commitment of Florida’s public universities to delivering academic excellence and world-class faculty expertise. These remarkable outcomes affirm the hard work and dedication of our university trustees, faculty, students, and staff across the state. On behalf of the Board of Governors, I applaud their efforts and extend our appreciation to Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature for their steadfast support and investment in higher education.”

In regional categories for southern colleges and universities, several other achievements were noted:
– Florida Polytechnic University remains ranked as #1 among regional public colleges in the South for five consecutive years.
– The University of West Florida rose four places to reach #6 among regional public universities.
– New College of Florida holds position #10 among public liberal arts colleges.

Additional distinctions include:
– Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University being named #1 Public HBCU for seven years running.
– At a broader level among both public and private schools regionally in the South, Florida Polytechnic ranks second overall.
– It also stands as third-best value among southern public schools and is recognized within America’s top 30 undergraduate engineering programs (for institutions without a PhD).

Other highlighted achievements:
Florida State is ranked twelfth nationally for first-year experiences.
– The University of Florida has remained a top ten national public university for eight straight years.
University of South Florida continues its five-year streak within America’s fifty best publics; it also ranks twelfth nationally on value measures and nineteenth on innovation metrics.
– The University of West Florida appears among southern regional leaders serving veterans.

According to U.S. News & World Report methodology nearly 1 500 institutions were evaluated using factors such as graduation rates social mobility student debt retention rates academic reputation.
