Dr. Katherine Chute, an adjunct professor of communication and public relations at Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA), is retiring after a career that has taken her to more than 10 countries. Her early love for reading and writing led her to pursue journalism and communications, starting with her own library and newspaper as a child.
Chute joined PBA in 2021, where she has worked to help students develop their skills in broadcasting, public relations, and writing. She was drawn to the university because it encourages students to integrate their faith into their professional lives.
Her sense of mission has shaped much of her work. Chute said she felt called to missions from a young age, a calling that eventually aligned with her husband Dr. Michael Chute’s path. The couple worked as writers for the International Mission Board, reporting on activities across Latin America before moving to Asia.
Reflecting on her teaching role at PBA, Chute stated: “Communication is everywhere and important to every function in life, whether it is communicating professionally or communicating on a personal level. It is so important to be able to be effective in that communication,” adding, “Much of the media we are exposed to has a secular angle, so that Christian perspective is tremendously important. That’s why I have been teaching at PBA—to affect those Christian communicators who can truly influence their world.”
Chute believes college years are crucial for young people making significant decisions about their future. She referenced Proverbs 3:5-6 as influential in her life: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
As she retires, Chute plans to spend time with family and continue creative pursuits such as writing novels and working with stained glass. She advises students: “Above all, stay grounded in your faith. That foundation will be important all through your life.”
