Residents in Martin County are being advised to take precautions after a recent case of Vibrio vulnificus, a rare but potentially dangerous bacteria. Dr. Olayemi Osiyemi, chair of infectious disease at Good Samaritan Medical Center, discussed the risks associated with this bacteria in an interview with WPBF 25 News.

Vibrio vulnificus can pose a threat to individuals who have open cuts or consume raw seafood that appears questionable. Dr. Osiyemi provided guidance for reducing risk: “Avoid raw oysters that look/smell/taste off,” he said. He also recommended not ignoring pain that seems worse than it appears and seeking medical care quickly if there is any uncertainty.

The bacteria is uncommon but can lead to serious health issues if not addressed promptly. The advice comes as part of ongoing efforts by local health professionals to keep the community informed about waterborne and foodborne illnesses.
