Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center has become the first hospital in Palm Beach County to use the Abbott MitraClip G5 transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) system for treating mitral regurgitation, a condition where the heart’s mitral valve does not close properly. The procedure was performed by interventional cardiologist Dr. Augusto Villa.
The new device, MitraClip G5, is designed to help physicians with easier handling and more precise positioning during procedures. It is delivered to the heart through a catheter inserted via the femoral vein in the leg and works by clipping together part of the mitral valve leaflets to reduce blood backflow.
“Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center continues to invest in some of the latest medical technology to ensure our patients have the best chance at good outcome so they can get back to doing what they love,” said PBGMC CEO Erik Cazares. “This is another tool in our medical toolkit available to our cardiac team, as we tailor our care specific to each patient’s needs.”
Mitral regurgitation can lead to serious health problems if untreated, including heart failure and death. Traditionally, patients who could not undergo surgery had limited options beyond medication that only managed symptoms without stopping disease progression. The introduction of MitraClip G5 offers a new treatment alternative for these patients.
