On October 2, 2025, Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) organized the first Voices for Change Preaching Festival. The event was part of the university’s Voices for Change Initiative, which began in 2024 after the School of Ministry received a $1.25 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., a major philanthropic foundation in the United States. The initiative is designed to prepare students and ministry professionals to respond to contemporary challenges with clear, compassionate, and biblically-based leadership.

More than 130 people registered for the festival’s opening activities, with additional participants joining during the weekend. Over 30 ministry leaders from different parts of the country contributed sermons, panel discussions, and breakout sessions focused on integrating faith into diverse cultural environments.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Matthew Kim, professor of preaching and pastoral leadership at Baylor University in Texas. Kim also serves as director of Baylor’s doctoral preaching program and holds an endowed chair in preaching and evangelism.

In his remarks, Dr. Kim said: “Pastors should welcome people’s pain without rushing them, verbalize love frequently and intentionally to their congregations, and model an unhurried, peaceful posture for those seeking guidance or spiritual support.” He highlighted empathy and emotional presence as key elements in pastoral work.

Dr. Kim referenced Romans 12:2—“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”—to stress that true spiritual change is achieved through God rather than individual effort alone. He suggested that pastors who allow God to guide their actions can overcome cultural barriers and help bring about transformation within their communities.

He further emphasized persistent prayer as central to effective ministry: “While caring deeply for a congregation can feel overwhelming, pastors can trust God to amplify their efforts.” Citing Paul’s advice to early church leaders, he described prayer as a source of strength during difficult times.

Dr. Kim concluded that today’s faith leaders must focus on compassion, communication skills, and purposeful prayer when serving both individuals and communities.
