Reva Jenson, a junior at Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) from Minnesota, is spending a semester abroad in New Zealand through the Rinker Center for Experiential Learning. Jenson is attending classes at the University of Otago in Dunedin, which is recognized as New Zealand’s oldest higher education institution and was established in 1869. The city features Scottish-inspired architecture and is surrounded by diverse natural landscapes including volcanic formations, steep hills, and various types of shorelines.
Jenson chose New Zealand for its natural beauty and sense of adventure. She described her first impression: “My first impression of my location was that it is beautiful,” Jenson recalls. “The nature is so insane; having mountains, wild sheep, beautiful beaches, and strong culture. There’s also amazing food.” One highlight has been visiting Milford Sound, a fjord known for its tall waterfalls descending from rainforests into the sea.
During her time abroad, Jenson has engaged with the local Māori culture. She noted being surprised by the use of Te reo Māori language on buildings and street names. Her program included a Haka lesson where she wore traditional Māori clothing and learned about the dance’s symbolism.
Jenson acknowledged some challenges such as adapting to a new academic system and being far from home but said these experiences have prompted personal reflection and spiritual growth. She cited Joshua 1:9 as an important verse during her time away: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
“My time abroad has shaped my worldview through exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and also new ways of living,” Jenson shares. “I find myself relying on God a lot due to me being outside my comfort zone, helping me grow in my faith.”
