Students from Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy participated in the Urban Youth Impact Stampede 5K on November 22, 2025, to honor Dr. Barbara Kelly, a former professor and community leader who passed away in August 2023.

Dr. Kelly was recognized for her dedication to the Urban Youth Impact (UYI) organization, which focuses on supporting families, preparing youth for careers, and providing enrichment programs for children facing challenges. She often joined students at these events and promoted their mission through service and mentorship.

The involvement of pharmacy students with UYI continues Dr. Kelly’s legacy by allowing them to use their academic training as mentors and role models for local children. Students guide young people in making decisions about their futures, such as pursuing higher education.

Alexes Burgos, vice president of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association and a pharmacy student at PBA, said, “This event built lasting connections between the students and the organization, creating opportunities for continued involvement in UYI programs and activities.” Burgos also noted that the event brought together students and community members to support UYI’s mission of strengthening the community through faith-based service.

Burgos explained that participation in events like this helps shape students into leaders prepared to serve their communities. “The experience laid the foundation for the development of confident, compassionate leaders,” she said.

Kelly was known for emphasizing leadership skills among her students and fostering an inclusive learning environment. Burgos added: “Continuing to participate in this event reflects her commitment to service, mentorship, and community engagement, and it carries forward the values she instilled in her students.”
