The IAM Union Local 2198 Young Workers Committee in Houston has organized a winter blanket drive in partnership with their Community Service Committee. The initiative collected 30 bags containing blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets for people experiencing homelessness as the winter season approaches. All donations were provided by members of IAM Local 2198.
Participants from the Young Workers Committee included Chairperson Quintarius Oliver and committee members Cora Walker and Eva Brooks. The Community Service Committee was represented by Chairperson Albert Harmason, along with Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges.
The committee has also engaged in other community service activities. Recently, they hosted the Inaugural Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser, which brought together union members, families, and supporters. Proceeds from this event went to Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines to support their mission of providing services at no cost to recipients.
Additionally, the committee partnered with Communities in Schools at Elsik High School in Houston to donate over 50 fully stocked backpacks to students before the start of the school year.
“This is a powerful example of union values in action,” said IAM Union Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”
IAM Union Local 2198 President Enrique Bojórquez commented on the contributions of young members: “Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members. From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”
IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director Dee Colbert added: “IAM Young Workers are committed to service, leadership and building stronger communities. The work being done by Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee in Houston reflects the future of our union. IAM Young Workers are driven, compassionate and community-focused.”
Through these efforts, IAM Local 2198 Young Workers aim to strengthen their community while upholding the core values of their organization.
