The Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) is urging residents to adopt energy-saving habits during National Energy Awareness Month in October. The commission emphasized that reducing energy use can help lower utility bills, a message it considers especially important given Florida’s high overall energy consumption.
“Energy Awareness Month highlights the power of making smart energy choices,” said FPSC Chairman Mike La Rosa. “When consumers take simple steps to conserve energy, they not only lower their monthly utility bills but also gain more control over their household costs.”
Florida ranks as the nation’s second-largest producer of electricity, following Texas, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Residential customers account for more than half of the state’s electricity use—54% in 2023—the highest residential share nationwide. This is largely due to widespread use of air conditioning and electric heating systems in homes.
The FPSC is encouraging Floridians to see Energy Awareness Month as an opportunity to start ongoing efforts toward smarter energy consumption throughout the year. The commission says that adopting efficient practices now can lead to lower expenses and contribute to a stable and reliable energy future for all residents.
