The start of the Florida citrus harvest signals the arrival of fall in the state, according to Steve Johnson, Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission. While many regions recognize autumn by changing leaves, Floridians mark the season with the picking of citrus fruit.
Johnson noted that this period is significant for growers who have worked throughout the year in preparation. He described a sense of determination and optimism among those involved in the industry.
“The recent FCC Meeting, which was held on October 22, was a reflection of those sentiments. We had a full house with all of our 11-member commission present either in-person or digitally, and quite a few of our industry partners in attendance, either to present or to contribute as our Florida Department of Citrus committees brought valuable updates and recommendations before the commission,” Johnson said.
He also reminded stakeholders that there is typically no Florida Citrus Commission meeting in November. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17 at 9:00 a.m. at the Bartow headquarters.
Steve Johnson serves as Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission and owns Johnson Harvesting, Inc., based in Wauchula, Florida.
