Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters has announced the creation of the Bhagavan Sambhavnath Endowed Professorship in Jain Studies within its Department of Philosophy. The new professorship aims to support teaching, research, and community engagement centered on Jain philosophy, which focuses on non-harm, detachment from material attachment, and openness to multiple perspectives. These principles are rooted in ancient Indian traditions and emphasize kindness, ethical conduct, and respect for all living beings.
The position was established with contributions from a group of donors led by Dr. Prithi Khotari, who serves on the college’s advisory board.
A national search is underway to find a scholar specializing in Jain philosophy for the new role. Recently, the department hosted the Jain Philosophy Conference. This event brought together scholars from across the United States and the United Kingdom to discuss topics such as the nature of soul, environmental ethics within Jainism, and critiques of one-sided epistemology.
Dr. Nicholas Baima is available for further information about this initiative.
