FAU professor Isaac E. Elishakoff receives J.S. Rao Medal for achievements in vibration engineering

Isaac E. Elishakoff, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Professor at Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, has been named the 2025 recipient of the J.S. Rao Medal in Vibration Engineering. The award honors significant contributions to vibration engineering and related technologies.

The medal, established in 2017 to honor the late J.S. Rao, recognizes individuals whose work has influenced areas such as rotor dynamics, machine design, and tribology. With this award, Elishakoff joins a select group of engineers recognized for advancing engineering science internationally.

“Professor Elishakoff’s selection for the J.S. Rao Medal is an extraordinary honor that reflects the global reach of his scholarship,” said Stella Batalama, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. “This recognition elevates not only the reputation of our college but also the stature of Florida Atlantic University on the world stage. His visionary contributions to vibration engineering and structural mechanics continue to shape the field, and his example inspires our students, faculty and researchers to pursue excellence with dedication and purpose.”

Elishakoff joined FAU in 1989 and is widely known for his research on random vibrations, structural reliability, buckling phenomena in structures and shells, probabilistic mechanics, and stochastic modeling. His work has had a global impact on engineering design codes and safety standards.

“I am profoundly grateful for this recognition, which honors the legacy of Professor J.S. Rao – a towering figure whose contributions have guided generations of engineers,” said Elishakoff. “To stand among the distinguished scholars who have received this medal is both humbling and deeply meaningful. This award is also a tribute to the support of my colleagues and graduate and undergraduate students at Florida Atlantic University, whose collaboration has enriched my work and strengthened our shared commitment to advancing engineering science.”

Elishakoff holds fellowships from organizations including the European Academy of Sciences; Royal Academy of Engineering; Japan Society for Promotion of Science; and American Society of Mechanical Engineers. A three-volume book series titled “Modern Trends in Structural and Solid Mechanics” was edited by Noel Challemel (University of Brittany), Julius Kaplunov (University of Keele), and Izuru Takewaki (Kyoto University) as a tribute involving researchers from 12 countries.

In recent years he was recognized as a Theodore von Kármán Fellow at Germany’s University of Aachen—a role commemorating von Kármán’s own pioneering academic career before leading Caltech’s Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory in America.

Elishakoff has served as Visiting Distinguished Research Professor at Technion-Israel Institute since 2013; Visiting Eminent Scholar at Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics; S.P. Timoshenko Scholar at Stanford; Frank Freimann/Henry Massmann Chair Professor at Notre Dame; W.T. Koiter Chair Professor at Delft University (Netherlands); Fellow at UK’s Royal Academy; inaugural President’s Award for Career Achievement recipient at FAU.

His recognitions include Israel’s Baroness Batsheva Rothschild Prize (1975), ASME Worcester Reed Warner Medal (2016), European Academy Blaise Pascal Medal (2021), ASCE Masanobu Shinozuka Medal (2025).

He has published over 630 scientific papers in international journals along with authoring or editing 34 books—including “Probabilistic Methods in the Theory of Structures: Random Strength of Materials, Random Vibration, and Buckling,” considered by peers among top texts in its field—and mentored more than 80 graduate students or postdoctoral researchers.

Over five years he authored five books influencing global research on topics such as probabilistic structural analysis or philosophies underpinning safety/reliability—addressing practical applications alongside theory like his book on cross-correlations’ effects in random vibrations challenging conventional modeling approaches.

Through ongoing research collaborations worldwide coupled with extensive mentorship efforts within academia, Elishakoff continues contributing significantly to advances within vibration engineering.
