Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science recently held “Engineer Your Future Day” at the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium on its Boca Raton campus. The event welcomed over 700 middle and high school students from 17 local schools, aiming to introduce students in grades 7 through 12 to engineering and computer science fields.
Stella Batalama, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, said, “The event celebrated creativity, teamwork and real-world problem-solving – showing that engineering is not just about equations and machines, but about people and the power to improve lives. Through lab tours, interactive demonstrations and conversations with FAU students and faculty, participants discovered how engineering connects directly to everyday life – from AI and robotics to sustainable energy, health technologies and smart cities. The day encouraged students to ask questions, envision themselves as future innovators, and embrace the idea that they can build the technologies of tomorrow.”
Students participated in presentations from each of the college’s four departments: biomedical engineering; ocean and mechanical engineering; electrical engineering and computer science; as well as civil, environmental, and geomatics engineering. Attendees also toured Engineering East and Engineering West buildings along with advanced laboratories. They had opportunities to interact with FAU students who presented their research projects.
The university described “Engineer Your Future Day” as part of its broader commitment to inspire young people to explore technology-related careers by providing exposure to current research topics such as artificial intelligence, robotics, sustainable energy solutions, health technology advancements, and smart city concepts.
