As colder temperatures are expected to arrive in the Carolinas next week, Duke Energy is encouraging customers to take steps to reduce energy use and manage costs during this period of increased heating demand.

The company reports that participants in its energy efficiency programs have saved over $1 billion on their bills since 2019. This figure demonstrates the potential for savings when customers adopt more efficient practices, particularly during cold weather.

Duke Energy offers several tools designed to help customers monitor and control their energy consumption. These include personalized usage alerts, which notify users when their energy use is higher than normal, and usage dashboards that break down energy consumption by day, week, or billing cycle.

The company also suggests a number of simple actions that can help lower heating costs. Recommendations include setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable setting, sealing leaks and adding insulation to prevent drafts, scheduling professional maintenance for heating systems, changing air filters regularly, using sunlight to naturally warm homes during the day, and operating ceiling fans clockwise in winter to distribute warm air.

Customers can also take advantage of Duke Energy’s programs such as free home energy assessments—which provide a complimentary kit and expert advice—rebates for equipment upgrades through Smart $aver, bill credits for shifting smart thermostat or water heater use away from peak times with Power Manager/EnergyWise Home enrollment, and weatherization assistance for income-qualified households that includes free upgrades like insulation and HVAC repairs.

More information about these offerings is available at duke-energy.com/SeasonalSavings.

Duke Energy serves 8.6 million electric customers across six states and operates 55,100 megawatts of energy capacity.
