Dolphin Research Center (DRC), located in Grassy Key, Florida, has reported a record number of manatee rescues by May 2025, surpassing the total for all of 2024. The organization is the only licensed manatee rescue team in the Florida Keys and collaborates with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Medical care for rescued animals is overseen by DRC’s veterinarian, Dr. Scott Gearhart.
The Manatee Rescue Team responds to calls about injured or sick manatees, transporting them to rehabilitation facilities until they can be released back into their natural habitat.
“Every rescue matters, because every manatee matters,” said Preston Surrage, Manatee Rescue Team and Environmental Services at DRC. “I’ve stood in the water with manatees barely moving, helped carry them into transport vehicles, and waited in the shallows during releases to see them swim free again. Those moments stay with you forever and remind you why we do this.”
Community involvement has played a significant role in these efforts. Residents have provided boats, kayaks, ramps, supplies such as sunscreen and water, and have watched over distressed animals until help arrived.
“This is what makes the Keys so special,” Surrage added. “It’s a community that comes together—not just for people, but for animals too. Every act of kindness makes a real difference.”
DRC relies on public support through donations, memberships, and visitors to fund its operations as a nonprofit organization. More information about supporting their work can be found at www.dolphins.org.
Founded in 1984, Dolphin Research Center focuses on marine mammal education and research while operating the region’s only licensed manatee rescue team. Its activities include education programs as well as rescue and rehabilitation initiatives aimed at protecting marine mammals.
