Approximately 56 employees at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). The decision follows a campaign focused on fair compensation, opportunities for career advancement, and having a voice in workplace matters.
Adante Balke, IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative, commented on the result: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”
The next step for the newly unionized group will be negotiating their first contract. Their goals include securing improvements in pay and benefits, expanding career development opportunities, and ensuring that workers can raise concerns without fear of retaliation. According to the IAM Union, collective bargaining will provide employees with a protected and democratic way to influence decisions that affect their jobs.
During the organizing process, some workers expressed concerns about management’s response to the union effort. Allegations included anti-union tactics intended to discourage organizing activities and the dismissal of an employee who supported unionization.
Discovery World staff play a key role in delivering interactive exhibits and educational programs that serve families and visitors throughout Milwaukee. Their work supports the museum’s mission as a local destination for learning.
IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli stated: “The IAM Union is proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family. We would like to give special thanks to Milwaukee Common Council Members Alderman Alex Brower, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman for standing in solidarity with Discovery World workers and supporting their right to organize. We stand ready to support them as they move toward a strong first contract that reflects their value, protects their rights, and ensures Discovery World remains a place where workers and the community can thrive together.”
The IAM Union represents about 600,000 active and retired members across industries such as aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, transit, healthcare, automotive sectors in both the United States and Canada. More information is available at goIAM.org.
