Citrus County Visitors & Convention Bureau, also known as Discover Crystal River, has introduced the Eco Compliance Partner Program to recognize manatee tour operators who prioritize environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance. The initiative is part of a broader plan to promote sustainability and protect local waterways.

The program aims to acknowledge businesses that adhere to federal, state, and local regulations, educate guests on responsible manatee interactions, and work to preserve eelgrass beds and spring-fed ecosystems in the area.

“This is about more than tourism,” said Auvis Cole, Director of Discover Crystal River. “This is about protecting what makes Citrus County special—our natural environment, our wildlife, and the legacy we leave behind. Our tour operators are on the front lines of that mission.”

To be certified as an Eco Compliance Partner, tour companies must meet several requirements. These include being licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and meeting all safety standards; holding a current Special Use Permit from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for Crystal River companies; providing pre-tour educational briefings or videos on passive observation practices; using anchoring systems that protect aquatic vegetation; and complying with seasonal manatee sanctuaries and protected zones.

Certified operators will receive an Eco Compliance Partner badge for use online and in marketing materials. They will also benefit from increased visibility through preferred listings on DiscoverCrystalRiverFL.com. Additionally, Discover Crystal River plans to launch a micro website focused on sustainability efforts throughout Citrus County.

Other benefits for certified partners include promotion in county-wide marketing campaigns focused on sustainable tourism, opportunities for collaboration with the county’s Visitors & Convention Bureau (VCB) and other eco-conscious partners, as well as preferred status in media opportunities during the year.

The program supports Citrus County’s Sustainability Pillar within its Tourism Strategic Plan and aligns with ongoing restoration projects such as eelgrass replanting, spring protection initiatives, and water quality improvements. It also responds to increasing interest among travelers in eco-friendly destinations.

“As more and more tourists are looking for eco-friendly and sustainable destinations, this program helps our community lead by example,” Cole said. “By highlighting the companies that are doing things the right way, we send a clear message that responsible tourism is not just welcomed here it’s expected.”
