The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo of the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates on September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The embargoed data will be made available to subscribers ahead of the public release scheduled for September 11.

The ACS offers detailed statistics about people and housing in the United States, including information on language use, education levels, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. According to the Census Bureau, “It is the only source of local estimates for most of the 40-plus topics it covers.”

Subscribers to the embargo will be able to access these statistics from September 9 at 10 a.m. ET until September 11 at 12:01 a.m. ET. The data covers all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, as well as other geographic areas with populations of at least 65,000.

Wire services and distribution outlets are not permitted to distribute any news stories or data files based on embargoed content before its official public release date and time. The Census Bureau directs interested parties to its embargo policy for further guidance.

All related data products—including those on data.census.gov, through APIs, summary files, and other tools—will become publicly accessible by 10 a.m. ET on September 11.

To register for embargo access or learn more about obtaining early access to these estimates prior to their general release date, visit https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
