The University Galleries at Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, in partnership with Compass Community Center, is presenting a new installation of panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt. This marks the third year of collaboration between the university and Compass Community Center to bring this artwork to South Florida.
The exhibition features five panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt and will be on display through Sunday, Dec. 14, at FAU’s Schmidt Center Gallery Public Space located on the Boca Raton campus.
First created in 1985, the AIDS Memorial Quilt has become recognized as the world’s largest community-assembled work of art. Each panel is made by individuals who want to honor someone affected by HIV/AIDS. Collectively, these panels serve as a visual record that preserves personal stories and highlights an important period in public health history.
According to organizers, “The exhibition invites audiences to slow down, observe the tactile language of fabric and stitching, and consider how communities come together in times of crisis and change. The installation transforms the gallery’s public space into a site of quiet engagement and thoughtful connection.”
Admission to the exhibition is free and open to everyone. For further information, interested visitors can call 561-297-2661.
